Mid Atlantic Surgical Associates (MASA) was founded by Dr. Grant V.S. Parr in 1984. Since that time, he has assembled a staff of eight surgeons, all of whom are board certified, and collectively perform over 2300 open heart procedures annually. MASA is the largest and busiest cardiothoracic surgery practice in the New York metropolitan tri-state area, and one of the largest cardiothoracic groups in the nation. Each surgeon has undergone a long and intensive training period, and has the following educational background:

    4 years of college
    4 years of medical school
5 years of general surgery residency
2-3 years of cardiothoracic surgery fellowship

All MASA surgeons are board certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Certification consists of both written and oral examinations given by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. The purpose of establishing board certification is to protect the public by establishing and maintaining standards in cardiothoracic surgery that assure the highest level of patient care. Every ten years, surgeons must meet the Board's requirements for recertification.
