OVERVIEW
Morristown Memorial Hospital is an Atlantic Health System private non-profit 575-bed hospital located in Morristown, NJ. Morristown Memorial Hospital services include cardiology, cardiac surgery, adult and pediatric oncology, critical and emergency care, inpatient rehabilitation services, obstetrics, and neonatal intensive care services. Morristown Memorial is also a Level I Trauma Center, a Level III regional perinatal center, and a regional pediatric center. It operates the largest Photopheresis center in the United States and the only one in the state of New Jersey.
CARDIAC PROGRAM
As a major provider of tertiary care services, Morristown Memorial Hospital provides comprehensive diagnostic and surgical services for the management of patients with heart disease. The cardiac program includes cardiac surgery, cardiac catheterization, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), electrophysiology studies (EPS) including ablation, and placement of implantable pacemakers and defibrillators. A full range of non-invasive cardiac services includes a comprehensive vascular laboratory, pacemaker clinic, EKG, pediatric and adult echocardiography, nuclear imaging, holter monitoring, stress testing, and in-patient cardiac rehabilitation.
Morristown Memorial Hospital maintains one of the most active cardiac surgery and cardiac catheterization programs in the nation. In 1999 the cardiac program performed 4600 cardiac catheterizations, 2300 angioplasties, and over 1500 open heart operations. For the last 7 years, Morristown Memorial has consistently performed more cardiac surgery than any other program in the state, and since 1988, MASA surgeons have performed a total of over 14,000 open heart operations at Morristown. Proving that experience matters ... MASA has consistently had survival results for coronary artery bypass grafting that have been among the highest in the state of New Jersey, and have surpassed the national average.
The plan of care of the cardiac surgery patient is conceived by a collaborative, multidisciplinary team composed of cardiac surgeons, cardiac anesthesiologists, cardiologists, electrophysiologists, physician assistants, critical care nurses, open heart surgical nurses, specially trained cardiac recovery nurses, respiratory therapists, dieticians, and physical therapists. Morristown Memorial Hospital has dedicated 4 Operating Rooms exclusively for cardiac surgery. Patients are treated in a 14-bed Open Heart Recovery Unit and a 54-bed Post-Procedure Cardiovascular Care Unit. In addition, patients benefit from an out-patient Cardiac Health Center dedicated to the prevention of cardiovascular disease, and to the rehabilitation of patients diagnosed with heart disease.
Morristown Memorial Hospital is a recipient of the Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence and is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. Morristown Memorial Hospital has been named 2 years in a row as one of the Top 100 Cardiovascular Hospitals in the country. Morristown Memorial Hospital has also been named one of the Top Ten Cardiovascular Surgery Hospitals in the country by the American Association of Retired Persons.
